The Star of David is also known as the Shield of David, Magen David, Hexagram, Six Pointed Star and King Solomon's Seal. It is a symbol composed of two Equilateral Triangles placed one on top of the other, pointing in opposite directions. Although it is used as a Jewish symbol as well as a national symbol of Israel, the Star of David is used by Eastern cultures since thousands of years. According to Jewish tradition, King Solomon advised his sages to use the symbol to protect people from evil spirits. In Capernaum, a settlement on the shore of the Sea of Galilee which was inhabited from 150 BC to about AD 750, a stone Star of David relief was found, dating back to the 3rd Century A.D.
The name "Magen David" was first mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud. According to Jewish tradition, King David had a Star of David symbol on his battle shield, but this hasn't ever been proven by archeological findings. In the Kabbalah, the symbol signifies Salvation which will be brought about by a Messiah, a descendant of King David. For this reason Sabbatai Zevi adopted it. He was a 17th Century kabbalist who claimed to be the long-awaited Jewish Messiah and later converted to Islam.
In alchemy, the combination of the fire and water symbols (up and down triangles) is known as the Seal of Solomon. The symbol is representative of the combination of opposites and transmutation. By combining the alchemical symbols for fire (upwards triangle) and water (downwards triangle), the alchemical symbols for earth and air are also created.
