Butterfly Facts
The butterflies' lightness and easiness symbolizes the ultimate freedom. Their bright and extravagant colors are the beauty everyone seeks. Their transformation from a caterpillar symbolizes renewal and resurrection. Through the ages butterflies have always been an inspiration for poets, writers, painters and composers.
All butterflies have four wings – a front pair and a back pair. The front pair are long and pointy, while the bag pair are comparatively smaller and narrower.
The biggest butterfly in the world, Alexandra's Birdwing, has a wingspan of up to 1 foot (30 cm). It can be found in the tropical rainforests of New Guinea.
The "dust" on butterflies' wings is tiny scales. They are the only insects whose wings are covered in scales. The color and shape of the scales determine the butterflies' visible colors.
Most butterflies live up to three weeks. Some may live up to a month, or even hibernate and live up to half a year.
One of the butterflies' most distinctive means of survival is camouflage. They blend into the colors of flowers, leaves, rocks, and ground. Some even have "eyes" on their wings to intimidate enemies. One type of butterfly eats poisonous plants, and therefore becomes poisonous itself to any predator.
