Home > keyrings with Christian Cross Pendants and Charms
The cross symbol began to be associated with Christianity in the 2nd Century B.C, and it began to be used widely as a Christian symbol in the 3rd Century. Prior to that Christians were afraid to expose the cross in public. One way to obscure it was to disguise the top part as a circle, making it look like a figurine. Christianity adopted the cross as a symbol following Jesus' crucifixion. His death on the cross, symbolizing his suffering, along with his resurrection, are perceived as a necessary step in man's path towards Liberation. Crucifiction was a popular way of torture and execution in the period of the Roman Empire.
According to Christianity, Jesus was tortured and crucified to repent for humankind's sins, and therefore remembering it is an expression of faith. The cross symbol is widely used in Churches and religious sites. Devoted Christians also hang a cross over the bed, in a central spot of the house, or as a pendant or charm on necklaces, bracelets, earrings or any other jewelry. Crosses are also widely used in Christian cemeteries, where they are placed in front of or over the graves. When Christians pray, enter a holy site, or witness a miracle or disaster, they tend to draw an imaginary cross over their chests. Over time, various factions and sects of Christianity have developed their own unique cross designs, to differentiate from one another.
