Amethyst's magical ability to extract alcohol from the bloodstream is just one of the stone's hidden powers. It is also known as the "Love Stone," "Peace Stone," or "Healing Stone." It is said that St. Valentine used to wear it constantly and therefore it can serve as a wonderful gift between lovers.
An ancient Greek legend explains why Amethyst can protect from drunkenness:
During a lustful orgy bathed in liquor and wine, Dionysus, the God of Wine, trapped a young nymph by the name of Amethyst and tried to rape her. Amethyst pleaded for mercy to the Goddess of Chastity. Then, her wish was granted and, as if by magic, Amethyst was transformed into a shiny, glittering stone in the lustful hands of the drunk Dionysus. Swiftly Dionysus sobered up and felt ashamed of his wrongdoings. To repent for his sin he gave the stone the purple color of his favorite wine and made an oath that whoever wears the stone shall be protected from the devious and malicious path of drunkenness.
According to another ancient Greek legend a deadly poison was put in a cup made of Amethyst. When the victim drank from the cup the poison had already lost its effect. The conclusion was that whoever comes into contact with the stone is immune to the effects of all drinks
