The Star of David is designed of two triangles,intertwined,and thus form a six pointed shape - Hexagram.One triangle points upwards whilst the other points downwards.
It is mostly considered to be the symbol of the nation of Israel.It is widely used by the Zionist movement as a national symbol and so it is portrayed on the flag of the state of Israel.
The six points suggest the four winds ,[directions in the Kabbalah - (East,West,North,South)],the sky and the Earth.The name Magen David (Star of David),when written in Hebrew,is composed of six letters.
King Solomon is also known to have his own special symbol which has 5 edges(pentacle,pentagram).This symbol was engraved on the seal of his ring and is thus known as "The Seal of Solomon".
An inscription of the Star of David was found on a tombstone of a Jewish grave in the city of Taranto in South Italy and is believed to be from the 3rd century A.D.
The Shield of David was first mentioned in the book of Eshkol Hakfar Lehakrai Yehuda Hadasai Who lived in the 12th century A.D.(chapters "reish mem bet" which mentions the shield of David with the angels Michael and Gabriel.
