Buy only a Kosher mezuzah
After calculating the number of mezuzahs you need, it's time to visit some shops and find the right and decent place to buy the mezuzah. Since the mezuzah has to be written in a very specific and exact way, only an expert can determine if it is Kosher (conforming to Jewish law). Here are some basic characteristics for determining if the mezuzah is Kosher:

- The mezuzah has to be written by hand by a certified Sofer Stam (scribe), an observant Jew who studied all the relative rules and regulations (Dinim ve Halachot). These rules were passed down from generation to generation. There are slight variations between the Sephardic and Ashkenazi styles.

- The mezuzah has to be written on a special Klaf (animal skin). This has to originate from a Behema Tehora (pure beast – an animal allowed to be eaten according to Jewish law).

- The scribe has to use a special pen called a "Kolmos." It is made out of a feather or a plastic imitation feather.

- Special ink has to be used. It has to be black and free of any ingredients originating from animals that are forbidden to be eaten by Jewish law.

- Prior to writing the scribe has to sketch the lines (21 lines) to achieve a straight, neat and orderly inscription.

- The mezuzah klaf has to be rolled from left to right and inserted into the mezuzah case while the part bearing the "Shin" faces upwards.

Not many people know this and therefore buy printed, photocopied or invalid mezuzahs.
