Installing the Mezuzah

The mezuzah is to be installed on the right side of the doorframe, when looking at it from outside of the house, or room. So it is on the right side of the person who enters the house from the outside or enters a bedroom from the hall way.

To determine at which height to fix the mezuzah, divide the doorframe into three imaginary parts. The mezuzah's bottom part should be in one line with the bottom of the upper third. It should be placed vertically or with a small angle, while its upper part points towards the person who enters the room.

In a doorway leading to a balcony the mezuzah should be placed on the right side of a person when he enters the house from the balcony. Some claim that in cases when the balcony is enclosed with a roof, entering it from the house is similar to entering a room, therefore the mezuzah should be placed on the right of the person who enters the balcony from the house.

The mezuzah has to be fixed tightly to the doorframe (using nails, screws or double sided sticky tape) and not left to hang loose or sway from side to side.

A house without a ceiling does not need a mezuzah. If it is only partly roofed and the roofed part covers the doorway then a mezuzah is required.

Every Jew is required to install a mezuzah at the entrance to his house and in all other rooms that require so. If there isn't a man over Bar Mitzvah age (13 years old) then the woman in the house has to install the mezuzah.
